  1. This poem pushed up old feelings of guilt. I once kept Zebra Finches in a small bamboo cage. At the time I was unaware I was being cruel.

    1. Having shared my life with animals, all sorts of animals for 55 years or so— this poem also makes me remember the oh so many “unintended consequences” related to animals. It’s a huge theme in my work and how I now think about the world.

  4. beautifully and simply stated with a gravity that can only come from a tangle of seaweed grasped by a tiny ghost.

    1. Such a beautiful reply… the image of seaweed remains in my mind forever. I went to a doctor’s office today and they had an enormous aquarium in the lobby. I thought of the sea horse.
