A beautiful apt word.

It’s an admission of human inadequacy. If this poem was expressing when they were first in love, the writer would have never taken those plums, but after 40 years of marriage it is possible, and they could still be in love. So, the poem also shows the complexity of the human experience.

About WCW short poem, mmm, In the middle of the night, while all sleep, I’m awake. Although quite adult in years, in secret I am still that child who takes for himself now what he knows will be missed later.

Tina writes–over the years she has come to believe this poem expresses these three words: sincere, sheepish, and loving.

The key to the reading of this poem are two words: “Forgive me”. When she says “me” its like a waterfall of a confession but one without guilt. It drops down in tone. She says it to be polite.
it isn’t like “Will you forgive me? But just a gesture of resignation. I did this but i am not sorry and I know you will continue to love me.

I have always taken this poem to be the natural expression of a poet who has written so much poetry that even the notes he tapes to the fridge are poetic. He just wanted to let someone know what happened to the plums and it came out poetry. He couldn’t help himself.

A listener from Colorado:
I can’t tell if I appreciate the fact that the speaker made sure to say how delicious the plums were, or if that just makes me mad! My spouse often manages to eat something I was hoping to save, or even hoping to save for both of us (but he eats it all). Maybe I would like it if he took the time to say how good the food was? Hmmm. Also who keeps their plums in the icebox? Hah!
