Hello Everyone — a special surprise — Joanne Durham contacted me, and I am sharing her comments below. Plus you will find the link to her website to learn more.

Dear Sher,

What a lovely surprise when a friend sent me the link this morning to your blog and I heard such a beautiful reading and commentary of “Sunrise Sonnet for My Son.” How did you come across my poem? It’s the final poem in my first poetry book, To Drink from a Wider Bowl (Evening Street Press 2022). As you can tell from the title, I’ve got a thing about bowls – one in the first poem, one in the last – both sonnets that create a bowl to hold everything in-between. I loved how the poem made you think about your mother, and the flowers you shared. I think one of the most satisfying things about writing poetry is when people, despite not sharing the same factual experience, find the poem transports them to their own experience of a similar feeling.

Thanks again!

  1. This really speaks to me as my grown children live far from me – one overseas in fact. I do love thinking of them when I do things that we used to do together and that I know they still do. Thank you for sharing this!

    1. Hello and thank you for your beautiful response to this poem. I am sorry I did not reply earlier as I have been traveling and had company in town immediately upon arriving back in town. I love what you mention about this poem making you think more about connections we all have with loved ones and good friends. And, of course our mothers are much in our thoughts right now. I am sorry to hear of your mother’s passing and may you find comfort now in many places including in poetry.
