I love this poem, and appreciate your thoughtful commentary on it. Kunitz is one of my favorites, and the same is true for my gardener husband Pablo. I gave him THE WILD BRAID book years ago.
Among my very favorite poems about aging and dying is The Long Boat. Are you familiar with it? https://allpoetry.com/The-Long-Boat

Hello and thank you for commenting. Just to let you know your comment is seen by all, so I did edit out any personal information for you. I will be happy to email you about the Quaker discussion separately. Wonderful to hear you enjoy Stanley Kunitz’s work so much. I would like to read The Wild Braid. I feel in connection with Kunitz’s relationship to land caring and garden growing. I am not familiar with “The Long Boat,” but it may come back to me as soon as I read it, which happened earlier today when someone sent me a copy of poem I recalled from years back but that did not ring a bell based on title alone. Oh, the next series of poems I will be sharing are written by Stanley Kunitz, so please stay tuned.

I think the thought that “it isn’t magic” is such a wonderful message for everyone searching and striving in whatever their life pursuit is!
