  1. The barbaric practices of humankind. The normalization of the family’s life is shockingly contrasted with grotesque abhorrence and repulsive violence. It seems impossible to make sense of it all. A very unnerving poem. Strong.

    1. I agree the strength in this poem is the juxtaposition of normalcy beside horror. I read this poem about five years ago, and it has never left me. I knew I wanted to share it at SherPoetry at some point. Thank you for sharing your response.

    2. Who was this Colonel? Why would anyone choose to dine with him?

      1. Normally I would say it is poetry and not a news article, so there is much we don’t know, and the poem is given to us in such a way to make the art work. But, in this case Forche´ was invited to El Salvador to cover what was happening there before the Civil War broke out. She was a witness to things happening and she wrote about it in her poetry (1978). It seems she was at this dinner with someone else and it was some sort of human rights connection– not sure. But here are a few articles that explain more. I believe I mention in the afterward Forche´compiled a massive anthology of witness poetry from around the world after her time in El Salvador.

  2. A listener in Idaho comments: Wow!  What a CONTROLLED poem!  So eloquent , so subtle, so telling in its details !  And your commentary, as you talk about the individual vs. the communal, absolutely gives me a way to understand the poem.  Bravo🫣🩵
