“This is True” by Chris Abani read by Roy Hernandez.

In this deeply personal talk, Nigerian writer Chris Abani says that “what we know about how to be who we are” comes from stories. He searches for the heart of Africa through its poems and narrative, including his own. (note–a bit of strong language). The final poem he reads –“Ode to the Drum” by Yusef Komunyakaa is stunning!

  1. Powerful and raw and brave. Thank-you for curating this poem, and the TED talk also, with the poem “Gazelle”.

    I feel humbled.

  2. I think that verse “This is True” is incredibly powerful. It speaks to the contradictions in our lives— the beautiful, the admirable, the noble, but also to the shameful, the misguided, the ugly. How else can we explain reality? –from a listener in Idaho

sometimes things come along in life that are like big windows to an expanse one never knew existed. like a dark curtain -drawn-to let it in. and when you’re not used to that particular view or light it can be a bit overwhelming; but if we just look at it for awhile, the fear of the height of it will fall away so that we can take it in, meditate on it then offer it to others. –from a listener in Oregon
