In this deeply personal talk, Nigerian writer Chris Abani says that “what we know about how to be who we are” comes from stories. He searches for the heart of Africa through its poems and narrative, including his own. (note–a bit of strong language). The final poem he reads –“Ode to the Drum” by Yusef Komunyakaa is stunning!

Thank you for your comment and for taking the time to explore this posting. This poem is quite haunting and unforgettable; I wondered how I might write a similar list beginning with ” I wore my mother’s face.” Ah… the places this would go…

sometimes things come along in life that are like big windows to an expanse one never knew existed. like a dark curtain -drawn-to let it in. and when you’re not used to that particular view or light it can be a bit overwhelming; but if we just look at it for awhile, the fear of the height of it will fall away so that we can take it in, meditate on it then offer it to others. –from a listener in Oregon
