    Lovely. Liked the back story and second reading. Such a moving last line. Having never lived in that world of war, I can only imagine, and rely on poets to place a fragment of that world gently in my palm.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to comment. So beautifully expressed — I was thinking how poetry does something for us that news doesn’t do–it shows another way to see the events that are happening. Poetry touches upon every aspect of being human.

  2. Note: On social media I heard Janna Jihad’s last name pronounce with a J and with Gee as in Gee-had. I pronounced J. And, this may be incorrect.

  3. even though i lived 74 years without the personal violence experienced by the poem’s voice…i look out a window and feel grateful for innocent sunlight trees birds bugs bats

    1. Thanks for sharing your reflections. I realized what we share in common with the writer is the ability to appreciate the natural world wherever we live. Sun is still available to feel gratitude for as are birds and other creatures.
